Latrobe City Council is investigating proposed speed limit changes on selected local roads across Latrobe City as part of the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

This project is a separate package of works under the program and focuses specifically on reviewing speed limits to better align vehicle speeds with the surrounding road environment and improve road safety.

We received funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to investigate and implement appropriate speed limit changes on selected local roads.

Why are speed limit changes being considered?

Speed is an important factor in both the likelihood of a crash occurring and how serious the outcome may be.

The roads being reviewed have been identified based on a range of factors, which may include:

  • the function and surrounding environment of the road;
  • residential and property access;
  • intersections and side streets;
  • pedestrian and vehicle activity;
  • existing speed limits;
  • crash history and crash risk; and
  • opportunities to provide a safer and more consistent speed environment.

The proposed changes are being considered as road safety measures and are not related to the condition or maintenance of the road.

Reducing vehicle speeds can provide drivers with more time to recognise and respond to other vehicles and hazards, reduce stopping distances and reduce the energy involved if a collision occurs.

This can be particularly important at locations such as T-intersections, side streets and residential driveways, where vehicles may be entering, leaving or crossing the path of through traffic.

What is happening now?

We are undertaking an initial consultation with residents and property owners directly affected by the proposed changes.

Letters are being delivered to properties along roads where a speed limit change is currently being considered. These letters identify the specific road, current speed limit and proposed speed limit.

No final decision has been made to implement the proposed changes at this stage.

This first stage of consultation is intended to help us understand how each road is used by the people who live there and identify any local issues that should be considered.

Feedback may include experiences relating to:

  • entering or leaving properties;
  • navigating intersections and side streets;
  • vehicle speeds and traffic movements;
  • crashes or near misses; and
  • other local road safety considerations.

How will my feedback be used?

Feedback from directly affected residents and property owners will be reviewed before the proposals progress further.

We will consider the feedback alongside road safety information and the characteristics of each road.

This may result in a proposed speed limit change being retained, modified or removed from the project.

Following this initial review, we intend to undertake broader community engagement on the refined proposals. The wider community will then have an opportunity to view and comment on the proposed changes before they are finalised.
