What’s next for the Old Methodist Church?
Latrobe City Council must decide the future of the Old Methodist Church at 41 Princes Street, Traralgon. If a sustainable solution to ensure the building is safe and compliant cannot be found the building may be demolished. Council is seeking submissions from the public by 5pm, 31 October 2025, to:
purchase the building for a nominal fee to either:
relocate the building; or
enter into a lease arrangement with VicTrack to maintain the building at its current location (at the discretion of VicTrack
store, display or repurpose parts of the building to honour and/or preserve the building’s history, in the event the building must be demolished.
Questions and more information
To discuss the project or a potential submission phone Council’s Property Operations team on 1300 367 700 or email latrobe@latrobe.vic.gov.au
A one-on-one meeting or site tour can also be arranged with Council’s Property Operations team.
A decision must be made about the future of this building.
No identified use
Council has no identified use for this building. With this in mind, if it is kept, this building would be added to Council’s venue booking pool. There are currently 16 other similar sites in Traralgon that are available to hire and several more in neighbouring towns.
No budgeted funds
Council does not have the significant funds needed to repair or relocate this building in the current budget and has a large portfolio of buildings to maintain across the municipality.
A sustainable solution is needed
If a sustainable solution to ensure the building is safe and compliant cannot be found the building may be demolished.
Next steps
Community consultation has indicated that our community would prefer the building is kept. Although, without an identified use and allocated funds, this is not possible.
Submissions close 5pm, 31 October 2025.
