At Latrobe City Council, we want to learn more about our community's waste and recycling habits, so we can improve our services.

Did you know that Australian’s produce an average of 540kg of waste per person each year?

Waste management is an important issue that affects us all. With the world’s population growing rapidly and consumption increasing at an unprecedented rate, waste generation is also increasing at an alarming pace. The result is overflowing landfills, polluted rivers, and oceans, and a severe impact on our environment.

Proper waste management is crucial to prevent pollution, conserve natural resources, and reduce the negative impacts of waste. It involves making good decisions to avoid making waste and reducing, reusing, recycling, and disposing of waste in a safe and sustainable manner.

Council's Sustainability Action Plan outlines how Latrobe City Council will work towards creating a circular economy and achieving greater recovery and re-use of waste products. Priority actions within the 2023-2033 timeframe include:

• Support the roll out of Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme and ban on single use plastics and disposable cups across Council facilities, community and local business
• Deliver waste management education and events
• Explore utilisation of green cells or alternative for long term biogas energy generation
• Increase access to hard waste collection services
• Continue to explore and trial the use of recycled/ recovered products in infrastructure projects
• Investigate the feasibility of new recycling schemes such as textiles, plant pots, etc
• Promote and support the establishment of Regional Material Recovery Facility in Latrobe City
